Played far too much today, but I did less web surfing and more Kirkus reading, so it's OK.
Made the right decision. I decided to scout the northern caves. There I found Fort Draco, with Boutell, the weapons guy (he's going to repair Demonslayer, once I find it). I found the GIFTS (Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Spiders) and, after several attempts, succeeded in wiping out the nasty arianna cave. Found the hot springs too, although I haven't collected on that quest yet.
All of that made me stronger, so I tried the giant that was pestering Formello, and I got him too. None of this was easy, but it was doable.
Bought some more good spells, and kept gaining strength. Bought the boat at Fort Draco (I forgot, we need two in this game) and did a bit more scouting. Killed random baddies, found random loot. I tried going west across the river, but the foes are still too strong for me there.
I'm finally getting a few decent magical items.
I managed to clear out the ground floor of the Slith Fort on the island. On the top floor I found the Slith plans and tried to kill the chief. I was doing pretty well until he sicced his secret weapon on me.
So I took the Slith plans back to Fort Dranlon (I mean, I have learned when to save the game), where I got a mage ring as a reward. Now, that will help me slaughter the chief and his minions.
First, though, I'll go back on the Ft. Draco river to a pool I found that will give me the Arcane Cloak, which makes all of my spells stronger. If I go straight to the Slith island without stopping in a town, it'll still be in effect for the fight.
So this has been a great day in Avernum!
